Dear Members and Friends of Dignity/New York,
Advent is a time of looking both forward and backward. Forward, as we start a new liturgical year and prepare to embrace the full meaning of the coming of Jesus. We look forward particularly to the 45th anniversary of Dignity/New York, as well as to our DignityUSA convention in Boston in July 2017. We also look backward, as we review our journey as individuals and as a community over the past year.
We continue to thrive as a vibrant and life-giving community for LGBTQ and straight Catholics and our friends. After much discussion and planning, we have begun to experience the gifts of our lay presiders at our weekly Sunday evening liturgies. Our Come to the Table lay-led liturgies, held on the third Sunday morning of the month at the LGBT Center, attract a growing number of people who participate both in person and electronically. Our Young Adults ministry provides a safe and nourishing spiritual and social space for our young people, while younger members of our community continue to take their place in leadership roles.
The recent election shocked and dismayed us, with the victory of a candidate spouting deeply offensive racist, misogynistic, anti-immigrant, and anti-Muslim rhetoric. The consequences of the election for the LGBT community are not clear, but the president-elect’s support from anti-LGBT organizations is deeply troubling, and the vice-president-elect is one of the most extreme anti-LGBT politicians in the country. But we have endured through some of the most difficult times in the history of the LGBT community, and we will continue to be a source of comfort, safety, and justice during whatever lies ahead.
As you can see from the financial report for the fiscal year just ended, it costs approximately $744 per week to hold our regular weekly liturgies. Only rarely do our weekly collections provide that amount. To help make up the difference, we rely on your generous contributions to our annual Advent Appeal. We trust that once again you will provide the financial support needed to maintain the activities of this community, which means so much to all of us.
With our best wishes for a beautiful and peaceful Advent and Christmas,
The Steering Committee of Dignity/New York
